SCOTTSDALE, AZ--(Marketwire - May 19, 2011) - Menopause is a natural part of aging for women, which takes place most frequently between ages 40 to 58. About 70% of women experience both physiological and emotional menopausal symptoms. EmpowHER is making it easier for women to understand and navigate through this transition with a free menopause and hormones resource page containing the latest information, support from real women and a video trailer for the recently-released film, "Hot Flash Havoc," a crash-course documentary on the effects of menopause.

According the U.S. National Institute on Aging, the average age of a woman having her last menstrual period -- typically the first sign of menopause -- is 51. Some women have their last period in their 40s, while some may experience it in their later 50s. Some women may experience peri-menopause even earlier. Common menopausal symptoms can include hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, mood swings, thinning hair, depression, trouble sleeping, headaches, fatigue, and memory and concentration problems.

According to Heidi Houston, executive producer of "Hot Flash Havoc," menopause turned her life upside-down. "My quality of life had faded to a black hole," says Houston. "When I finally got to an informed doctor and the right answers, my 13 year-old son said to me, 'Mom, I don't know where you have been but I am glad you're back.' 'Hot Flash Havoc' was produced because it took me three years, five doctors, countless clinics and medicine men before I got answers to my symptoms that I did not know were the precursor to menopause. I knew that finally a doctor had changed my life and I decided to change others. It has been quite a journey to get the straight truth and create a movie that will make you laugh, cry and think."

"It's important to remember that menopause affects every woman differently," says Elizabeth Lee Vliet, M.D., women's health Physician, Author, and Founder of Hormone Health Strategies (HER Place®), a medical practice specializing in individualized evaluation and treatment for hormone problems, who is featured in the film. "There is a short, but critical, window of opportunity a few years before and about three years after menopause for women to get the right treatment to reduce later health risks. Missing this window of opportunity means hormones are not as effective. That's why educational resources and support around menopause are so important. Menopause effects are far more than just hot flashes or bone loss -- there are physical, emotional and relationship impacts that need individual evaluation and help so that women can maintain health and vitality."

"I suffered for a long time after my hysterectomy, feeling alone and powerless. However, after an arduous journey, I fortunately found the help I needed," says Michelle King Robson, EmpowHER's Founder, Chairperson and CEO, who was treated by Dr. Vliet and is also featured in the film. "I started EmpowHER as a result of my recovery and discovery that so many other women were also suffering silently. Through EmpowHER, we've created an information portal and social networking support system to connect and educate women so that they don't have to suffer through any condition feeling alone or powerless."
