EmpowHER Offers FREE Resources and Support to Women Living With Ovarian Cancer

Early Diagnoses of Ovarian Cancer Can Lead to a 93 Percent Survival Rate in Women in the United States

SCOTTSDALE, AZ--(Marketwire - September 1, 2010) -  EmpowHER is offering free access to world-class health information as well as a supportive community for women diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The health media company for women supports Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month during September by providing a dedicated resource page on for women looking for information and others to talk to about ovarian cancer.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, among women in the United States, ovarian cancer is the eighth most common cancer and the fifth leading cause of cancer death, after lung and bronchus cancer, breast, colorectal, and pancreatic cancers. The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 21,880 new cases of ovarian cancer will be diagnosed in the United States during 2010 and that 13,850 will result in death.

Being diagnosed with ovarian cancer is difficult and life changing. Fortunately, medical advances have made treatments more effective. Women diagnosed in the earliest stages have a five-year survival rate of nearly 93 percent, according to the American Cancer Society.

"The key in management of ovarian cancer and if we really want to make a difference in patient survival is to detect that cancer early and institute treatment early," says Dr. Philip Sarrel, Emeritus Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut and member of EmpowHER's Medical Advisory Board. "When the cancer goes undiagnosed it can spread to the stomach, vagina and uterus, creating more complications and increasing risk of death. More often, it affects women ages 65 or older, but realistically, it can affect women of all ages. If a woman is experiencing any symptoms for two weeks or more, she must visit a physician, it could save her life. When initial tests indicate the possibility of ovarian cancer, referral to a specialist, a gyn oncologist, is appropriate care," he adds.

For women dealing with ovarian cancer, EmpowHER has created a dedicated resource page on its site where women can find topical medical articles, videos and guides to additional online resources.

"Being diagnosed with ovarian cancer isn't a death sentence. Early detection can lead to high survival rates," says Michelle King Robson, EmpowHER's Founder, Chairperson and CEO. "Ovarian cancer manifests in many different ways and the symptoms can be easily confused with other conditions, which can confuse women about what they are in fact experiencing. Women who are living with cancer can reach out to other women through EmpowHER's website for strength and support. No woman should ever suffer ovarian cancer alone," she adds.
