EmpowHER Showcases Amazing Heart Story and FREE Resources in Support of American Heart Month

Heart Disease in the Number One Killer of Women; Learn More About One EmpowHER Member's Heart Disease Journey and Find Information That Could Save Your Life

SCOTTSDALE, AZ--(Marketwire - February 1, 2011) - In honor of American Heart Month, EmpowHER is featuring the story of site member Rebecca Fortunato, who has been dealing with heart disease since her early 30s, and offering free access to recent health articles, information from experts, polls and other resources on heart disease and heart health through its special page on the site. Armed with the latest information in heart health, EmpowHER encourages women to take advantage of vital knowledge and take greater control of their own health.

According to the American Heart Association (AHA), coronary heart disease is the single leading cause of death for American women. Nearly twice as many women in the United States die of heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases than from all forms of cancer, including breast cancer.

Typically, heart disease affects older women, but when Rebecca Fortunato began feeling unusual chest pain at the age of 31, she never imagined that she would be affected by heart disease at her age. After visiting multiple doctors, it was decided that stress was the primary cause of Fortunato's deteriorating health. Driven by her instincts and a close friend, Fortunato refused to accept the initial diagnoses. Finally, in late 2007, after misdiagnoses from 6 previous doctors, she was correctly diagnosed with coronary microvascular disease (CVD).

Overwhelmed with worry, Fortunato began to panic and scoured the Internet searching for information on her condition. During her search, she came across EmpowHER's flagship site,, and found the encouragement she needed by connecting with multiple women who had similar conditions and reliable information on the site from experts. Shortly after, Fortunato began writing a blog modeled after the support she received from the website. She's adopted the EmpowHER mission and message of "becoming your best advocate for your own health and wellness," in the hopes of encouraging women, regardless of their condition, to follow their heart and find the answers they are seeking.

"Heart disease can have devastating effects on women by shortening their lives or impairing their quality of life if they suffer from heart attacks, strokes or heart failure," says Dr. Annabelle Volgman, medical director of the Heart Center for Women at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. "Most heart disease can be prevented by a heart healthy lifestyle including proper nutrition, physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and reducing stress. Women should also consult health professionals for advice on treatment options to lower their risk of heart disease."

"As women, we know so little about heart health," said Michelle King Robson, EmpowHER's Founder, Chairperson and CEO. "Since 1984, the number of cardiovascular disease-related deaths for females has exceeded those for males.* I think we as a female society have to pause and seriously question why this is happening. We may not know it, but we could be just a heartbeat or two away from death. That's a pretty intense thought, but talk to someone who has had a heart attack and it may not seem as outlandish. I hope every woman takes time this month to access our resources and really think about how they can improve their heart health and change their lives."
