EMS Technologies Ranks No. 1 in DVB-RCS Market Share

Attention: Business/Financial Editor, Tech/Telecomm Editor MONTREAL--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 19, 2005) - (PRIMEZONE) -- EMS Technologies Ranks No. 1 in DVB-RCS Market Share, According to Analyst Report from Northern Sky

EMS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:ELMG) announced today that the company has No. 1 market share for DVB-RCS open-standard hub and terminal equipment, according to the December report issued by Northern Sky Research.

The report, "DVB-RCS and DOCSIS: Reassessing the Viability of Satellite Standards," finds an increasing use of the DVB-RCS (Digital Video Broadcasting -- Return Channel via Satellite) standard, with increasing numbers of satellite operators and service providers offering DVB-RCS-based service. In roughly 19 months, the number of DVB-RCS hubs has more than doubled from 32 at the beginning of 2003 to 68 as of late 2004. Hubs are now deployed in every region and utilize capacity from virtually every major satellite operator around the globe.

According to the report, EMS Technologies has 59 percent market share for DVB-RCS hubs deployed in 2004, representing the largest market share of any equipment vendor of this open satellite standard.

"Our interviews with EMS's customers indicate that EMS's long-standing focus on quality and performance has been a key factor in these procurements over the past 12 months," said Christopher Baugh, President of Northern Sky Research. "These figures are no surprise given EMS's leadership role in the DVB-RCS space for many years."

"Northern Sky's report reflects our own market research that we are the leader in DVB-RCS -- we're thrilled to have that confirmed by an independent third party," said Don Osborne, senior vice president and general manager, EMS Satellite Networks (SatNet) Division. "We're enthusiastic that the DVB-RCS market has a promising future. We're seeing an increasing number of customers demanding DVB-RCS solutions in their requests for proposals."

EMS Technologies will be focusing on expanding its base of DVB-RCS solutions, already deployed in Europe, South America and Asia, to the North and South American markets in 2005.

"In North America, customers have only recently begun to focus on the benefits of open standard satellite technology. Our recently announced hub contract with Clear Channel Satellite Services of Colorado is an example of this trend, and we are seeing other important customers, such as key departments of the U.S. government for example, now adopting the DVB-RCS open standard," said Osborne.

EMS's DVB-RCS product and technology solutions enable two-way broadband access for a wide variety of networking applications. Applications range from Internet access and simple web browsing, to more sophisticated virtual private networks, wireless networking, videoconferencing and voice-over-IP. EMS's DVB-RCS solutions are the only multiple-access solutions capable of delivering data transfer rates of up to 45Mbps for downloads and up to 4Mbps for uploads at each remote terminal, which is enough bandwidth to support a small business or even an entire community from a single remote terminal.
