COWANSVILLE, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Dec. 13, 2011) - On December 13, 2011, at approximately 7:30 p.m., the hostage taking situation at the Cowansville institution ended. The inmate who had barricaded himself in a room with a staff member surrendered following a negotiation led by the negotiators of Correctional Service Canada (SCC).
The hostage is safe and has not been harmed. Normal operations at the institution will gradually return to normal. Staff members and inmates have not been harmed during the incident. As it is the case in all similar circumstances, CSC will ensure the necessary services are provided to employees.
CSC will be conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. CSC will cooperate fully with the police in their investigation and criminal charges may be laid.
Cowansville Institution is a medium security institution located in Cowansville, Quebec, with a population of approximately 400 inmates.
