End Roadside Zoos, MPP David Zimmer Says

Zimmer to introduce Bill that would regulate zoo standards

Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, News Editor, Photo Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO, MEDIA ADVISORY--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 23, 2006) - Willowdale MPP David Zimmer says action is needed to finally put an end to roadside zoos.
"Animals are living in often miserable conditions," said Liberal MPP David Zimmer. "Human safety is also often compromised."

Willowdale MPP David Zimmer is introducing a bill in the Ontario Legislature which if passed would eliminate roadside zoos by setting new standards for the care of animals.

Zimmer's bill comes on the heels of the Environmental Commissioner's report, which identified large regulatory gaps in Ontario's zoo licensing regime.

"There are no regulations for keeping tigers, lions, or monkeys in your backyard," says Zimmer. "The Bill I'm putting forward will protect the public and put an end to the mistreatment of animals in zoos that maintain low standards of care."

Details of the Bill will be provided at a media conference on Monday. Representatives from the World Society for the Protection of Animals, the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and Zoocheck Canada will join Zimmer at the media conference.
