Energy professionals' right to picket maintained

Attention: Assignment Editor, Business/Financial Editor, Energy Editor, News Editor, Tech/Telecomm Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - June 28, 2005) - Ontario Power Generation has been granted an injunction restraining picketing by the Society of Energy Professionals, but the restraints involved are minimal.

"Our right to picket at Nanticoke and elsewhere is restrained only to the extent that we not do anything unlawful," said Keith Rattai, Hydro One Local Vice President of the Society of Energy Professionals. "Our right to communicate with OPG employees entering OPG properties is entirely maintained, and we will continue to do so."

"Now more than ever," he said, "it's time for Premier McGuinty to do the responsible thing, and resolve this strike."

Mr. Justice Kent found that though "it's hard to look forward clearly in a province as large as Ontario," the evidence supported OPG's claim that there was a significant risk that electricity supply would be affected.

The order that issued was agreed to between OPG and the Society, and enjoins the Society from "unlawfully obstructing or otherwise interfering with" employees, etc. attempting to enter the premises at Nanticoke.

"We've agreed not to break the law," said Rattai, "and I'm sure we'll be able to live up to that undertaking."

Professional employees at Hydro One are currently on strike to resist Hydro One's demand that they accept 11 to 22 per cent in pay cuts, and a discriminatory two-tier wage system for newly hired employees.

The Society of Energy Professionals represents more than 6,000 professional employees in the electricity industry in Ontario, including engineers, scientists, supervisors, and others. The Society is Local 160 of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers.
