EnerNOC Joins OpenADR Alliance to Advance Open Standards in Automated Demand Response

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - January 19, 2011) - EnerNOC, Inc. (NASDAQ: ENOC), a leading provider of energy management applications for the smart grid, today announced its membership in the OpenADR Alliance, an industry group created to foster the development and adoption of Open Automated Demand Response (OpenADR) standards. EnerNOC, which currently manages a demand response network of more than 5,100 megawatts across more than 8,000 commercial, institutional, and industrial sites, currently participates in several different standards organizations to accelerate the growth of demand response worldwide.

OpenADR is an open standards communications protocol designed by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). It is currently used to support several ongoing utility automated demand response programs. EnerNOC recently acquired Global Energy Partners, a company with extensive experience in implementing automated demand response solutions that has worked closely with LBNL to develop and test OpenADR. Through participation in the Alliance, EnerNOC will continue to improve, implement, and test the technologies needed to enable utilities and grid operators to design automated demand response programs that maximize the value of demand response.

"As the market leader in demand response, EnerNOC has invested millions of dollars in its technology and business processes to enable seamless integration of a wide variety of DR participants. Standards like OpenADR assist us in that mission by creating consistent messaging and communications protocols, driving down our implementation costs, improving the scalability of our DR network, and helping customers maximize participation," said Terry Sick, Vice President of Engineering at EnerNOC. "EnerNOC is already one of the largest providers of automated demand response, and we look forward to contributing to its ongoing implementation and improvement through the OpenADR Alliance. At the same time, we will continue to offer the widest array of participation options possible to meet the needs of our utility partners and end-use customers."

Automated demand response accelerates response to DR dispatches, enhances building management system integration, and facilitates the use of demand response as a balancing resource to enable greater deployment of intermittent renewable generation resources such as wind and solar power. EnerNOC assists both its utility and commercial and industrial customers in the design and implementation of fully-automated and semi-automated curtailment programs that address specific system needs. EnerNOC also ensures resource availability during automated dispatches by monitoring performance in real time in order to mitigate issues such as inadvertent customer override, equipment malfunction, or connectivity loss, and thereby preserve long-term program integrity. Automated demand response will continue to be an important part of EnerNOC's broad-based demand response portfolio, which includes the full spectrum of commercial, institutional, and industrial DR resources.
