Enersource Bucket Truck Donation Supports Cambrian College

Vehicle offers hands-on experience in program targeting skilled electricity trades gap

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 3, 2008) - Enersource Hydro Mississauga recently delivered a large bucket truck to Sudbury's Cambrian College, as a donation to a unique program the college offers. Cambrian's Powerline Technician program, the first of its kind in Ontario, prepares graduates for the power distribution industry, which will experience significant staff turnover during the next decade. The vehicle, a double bucket aerial device extending to a height of 55 feet, would normally exceed the capacity of program funding. It was received as a welcome addition to the program which enters into its third year in the fall of 2008.

"We thank Enersource for their generous donation," said Michel Barbeau, Dean, School of Skills Training/SkyTech. "The double bucket truck will support the ongoing growth and development of Cambrian College's Powerline Technician program. It will enable Cambrian's faculty to enrich the curriculum delivery and provide hands-on training opportunities for our students, which will enhance their employability in the electrical utility sector in Ontario and beyond.

"Our partnerships with companies such as Enersource help the College to maintain its status as the leader in Co-op Diploma Apprenticeship training in Ontario," continued Barbeau. "Through partnerships, Cambrian ensures a continuous supply of qualified graduates who can meet industry's needs for skilled and job-ready workers."

Positive relationships were forged between Enersource Hydro Mississauga and Cambrian College as a result of the recent visit by company representatives and delivery of the bucket truck. While in Sudbury, Enersource conducted interviews for co-op positions. "It is great to see colleges now offering programs for skilled trades, that will yield high caliber graduates," said Craig Fleming, President and CEO of Enersource Corporation. "This relationship is beneficial for our company as we plan for our next generation of skilled trades resources. The students have completed much of the training that takes place during a four-year apprenticeship program, and that will make the transition much easier."

The two year program offered at Cambrian College incorporates two co-op terms, and the first group of students who graduated this May, are graduating at the right time. The Arnett Report, commissioned by the provincial government in 2007, disclosed 44.4 years as the average age of a power line worker and found that 40 per cent of these skilled trades workers were eligible for retirement within the next 10 years.
