Enersource Hydro Mississauga: Hershey Centre Shines Brighter Thanks to Rooftop Solar Panels

Enersource helps flip the switch on City of Mississauga's largest solar energy installation

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 17, 2008) - The roof of the Hershey Centre is now home to a new team of 144 photovoltaic panels that connect to form the largest solar energy installation in Mississauga.

Jointly funded by Enersource Hydro Mississauga and the City of Mississauga, the system will produce 25 kilowatts of electricity at peak output. The energy will be sold to the Ontario grid generating revenue of approximately $12,500 per year. The project is also expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 25,000 kilograms per year for approximately 25 years.

"The Hershey Centre roof is a great space to capture the sun's energy," said Ward 11 Councillor George Carlson, Chair of the City's Environmental Advisory Committee. "This installation is a terrific model of integrating renewable energy with building design that can be used by the City and other businesses in Mississauga."

The project also represents Enersource's first foray into solar energy. It is one of numerous initiatives that Enersource has undertaken over the past three years as part of our $10 million investment in conservation. "We are committed to enhancing the environment in the community and are pleased to contribute towards one in this key public space," said Craig Fleming, President and Chief Executive Officer of Enersource Corporation. "Renewable energy projects are beginning to take hold throughout our city, and while they may be smaller in scale, collectively, they represent an important contribution toward meeting our future energy needs"

Combined with the environmental benefit of installing green technologies at its properties, the City can also take advantage of Ontario's Clean Energy Standard Offer program, where payments are made by the Province to small clean-energy generating systems, such as the Hershey Centre, when the power produced is injected back into the electricity distribution grid.

The public can view the electricity output of the solar panels in real time by visiting www.enersource.com/solar or www.mississauga.ca/environment. Visitors to the Hershey Centre Arena and the adjacent new Hershey SportsZone Sports Complex can also view the solar production data and learn more about solar energy on computer monitors installed in the lobbies of both venues.

In celebration of environmentally-friendly technology and International Earth Day, the City of Mississauga and Enersource Hydro Mississauga are holding an open house exhibiting this installation at the Hershey SportZone Sports Complex on Saturday, April 19 from 1 to 4 p.m.
