ENPRO in Final Days of Post-Tropical Storm Irene Cleanup Across Vermont

Oil and Hazardous Materials Impacts From Flooding Addressed at State of Vermont Waterbury Complex, Mobile Home Parks, and Other Residential and Commercial Properties

BURLINGTON, VT--(Marketwire - Nov 8, 2011) - In the immediate aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene, ENPRO Services, Inc. (ENPRO), a customer-focused firm specializing in the management of oil and hazardous waste, was contacted by the State of Vermont, Buildings and General Services to assist in addressing environmental impacts resulting from the storm. As soon as the floodwater -- which left watermarks over six feet high in some cases, and displaced numerous tanks and containers of oil and hazardous materials -- had receded from the State of Vermont Waterbury Complex, ENPRO was charged with assessing the Complex and remediating chemical and petroleum-impacted areas throughout the facility. Now, ENPRO's work at the Complex and at other locations across the state, including mobile home parks and other residential and commercial properties in Waterbury, Lyndon, Rutland, and Wilmington, is in the completion stage.

"Between the Waterbury Complex, three large mobile home parks and over 15 residential and commercial properties, many people's homes and work places were impacted by the storm- and flood-related chemical and petroleum releases," said Jeffrey Simone, General Manager and Senior Environmental Scientist, Burlington, VT field office of ENPRO Services, Inc. "From these locations alone, ENPRO treated nearly 250,000 gallons of petroleum-impacted water and properly managed and disposed of approximately 60 tons of oil impacted sediment. In addition, ENPRO managed the specialized disposal needs of flood impacted chemicals from the Complex's two laboratories. It is hoped our work will hasten people's returns to their homes and workplaces."

One of the largest tasks undertaken by ENPRO during post-storm emergency response actions was setting up and maintaining an on-site water treatment system. The system, located at the Waterbury Complex, was comprised of two 21,000-gallon fractionation tanks connected to four bag filters and two, 2,000 pound liquid phase granular activated carbon units designed to remove petroleum hydrocarbons from water collected throughout the Complex. This system was also made available to flooding victims throughout Vermont through the State of Vermont Petroleum Clean-Up Fund. The use of this system increased the efficiency of residential basement clean-ups throughout Vermont and provided a large cost savings to the State funded program.

ENPRO kept the clean-up local: the company constructed a sediment-drying area at the Complex to allow oil impacted sediment to dry, facilitating disposal at a local landfill instead of transporting this waste to an out-of-state facility at a greater cost. ENPRO field chemists identified, segregated and properly packaged flood impacted chemicals throughout the Complex, including two laboratories, various office locations, and the maintenance garages. Chemical wastes were securely staged on site for subsequent disposal at ENPRO's RCRA-permitted Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facility in Williston, VT.
