Ensuring Oversight for Crown Corporation Travel and Hospitality Expenses

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - June 22, 2015) - The Honorable Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board, today issued the following statement on expenses for Crown corporations:

"Our Government has made consistent and focused efforts to reduce the cost of travel, hospitality, and conferences. As President of the Treasury Board, I expect all federal institutions to ensure public funds are being properly managed.

Recently, I have been made aware of incidents where expenditures have not been managed in a responsible manner. This abuse of taxpayer money is unacceptable and will not be tolerated by our Government.

As such, our Government is taking the necessary steps to extend the provisions of the Treasury Board Directive on Travel, Hospitality, Conferences and Event Expenditures to Crown corporations.

Our Government has saved millions of dollars on eliminating back office inefficiencies, such as reducing travel expenses by using virtual conferencing tools, a savings of $42 million alone.

While Crown corporations do manage their own expenses, Canadians expect them to be transparent and accountable.

This initiative will ensure Crown corporations have a consistent and uniform oversight mechanism, bringing them in line with the same guidelines as public service employees."
