entrada Kommunikations Reduces 3G Data Costs and Improves Employee Productivity With Riverbed

IT Distributor Enables Remote Workers to Access Centralized Applications Over the WAN in Seconds via 3G Data Cards; Increases Employee Productivity While Cutting Costs

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - December 13, 2010) - Riverbed Technology (NASDAQ: RVBD), the IT performance company, today announced that entrada Kommunikations, an IT distributor based in Paderborn, Germany, has deployed Riverbed® Steelhead® appliances and Steelhead Mobile to provide its branch office and remote workers faster access to business-critical applications located in its central data center, in particular Lotus Notes. Due to its Riverbed wide area network (WAN) optimization deployment, entrada has experienced a 13x reduction in bandwidth utilization, which has reduced the costs associated with transmitting data via 3G data cards, and up to a 10x improvement in application performance speeds, which has resulted in greater employee productivity.

entrada Kommunikations works with a network of IT security partners to configure and deploy IT security systems and technology in Germany and Switzerland.

entrada's sales teams often work remotely and rely upon 3G data cards to connect to the data center via the WAN. The 3G connections operate on an expensive, volume-based tariff. Once the data limit is reached, users are charged EUR 1.09 per additional 1MB of data, and entrada was finding costs quickly increasing as a result. In addition, remote users were complaining of severe delays when accessing Lotus Notes, which was taking so long to download that the application was virtually unusable. entrada's Computing Centre Manager, Robert Cerny, explained: "We needed to resolve two issues -- to increase user productivity by accelerating key applications and reduce our overall IT costs."

entrada investigated various WAN optimization alternatives. "We wanted to improve user productivity without adding complexity to our existing infrastructure and we needed a solution that would also benefit our remote workers. We investigated a number of alternative vendors, but Riverbed was the only one that had a truly viable mobile solution," said Cerny.

entrada experienced dramatic performance increases when the company installed Steelhead appliances at its branch office and data center, and Steelhead Mobile on its sales team's laptops. The company has seen a 13x reduction in bandwidth utilization across its entire network, and office-based and mobile workers have seen up to a 10x improvement in application performance speeds. "Prior to installing Riverbed it would take our remote employees almost three minutes to access Lotus Notes," explained Cerny. "Because we deployed Steelhead appliances at branch office and Steelhead Mobile on our employee laptops, all of our users can now access those files in a matter of seconds. The difference is considerable and our employees are now more productive."

Riverbed WAN optimization has reduced redundant bytes across the WAN, resulting in remote users sending less data over the WAN via the 3G cards. Since the majority of remote users are no longer exceeding their monthly data limit, entrada is experiencing significant cost savings.

"Choosing Riverbed was one of the smartest things we've done in a while," said Cerny. "We've achieved both of our goals by improving employee productivity without adding significant costs or complexity to our existing IT infrastructure. The deployment was straightforward, our day-to-day operations were not disrupted during the installation, and employees saw a benefit immediately. Riverbed has been a huge success for us, and I can't praise the solution enough."
