EnviroLogix Welcomes a New Vice President


PORTLAND, ME--(Marketwire - April 29, 2008) - EnviroLogix Inc., a leading provider of immunoassay test kits for the food safety, water quality and transgenic trait detection markets, today announced that Vladimir A. Koulchin, Ph.D., has joined them as the company's Vice President of Product Development and Chief Scientific Officer.

Dr. Koulchin received a M.S. degree from Moscow State University and a Ph.D. in Bioorganic Chemistry from the Zelinsky Institute of Organic Chemistry in Moscow. He was employed at the Shemyakin Inst. of Bioorganic Chemistry and the Gamaleya Inst. of Epidemiology and Microbiology before joining the Research Center for Experimental Biology and Medicine in Borstel, Germany. During this time, he concentrated on immunochemistry and enzymology with a focus on antibody production and purification, lipopolysaccharide antigen synthesis, and analysis. From 1993-1995, Dr. Koulchin was a Senior Scientist at Medimmune Inc. (Gaithersburg, MD). By way of a CRADA with the Walter Reed Army Inst. of Research, he became engaged in HIV vaccine development. From 1995-2000, Dr. Koulchin was the Vice President of Research & Development at Binax, Inc., (Portland, Maine), responsible for the corporate R&D budget and leading the process to identify, select and develop research projects for commercialization. He supervised the technical and business aspects of research projects involving immunoassay systems in ELISA and ICT formats. While successfully managing the development of 10 immunodiagnostic systems, he acquired further expertise in enzyme, gold, and magnetic immunoassay methods.

Leaving Binax in 2000, he founded Chemogen, Inc. (So. Portland, Maine), and was Chemogen's President, then Chief Scientific Officer, following the successful pursuit of and investments by venture capital organizations. At Chemogen, he developed direct antigen tests for the diagnosis of human mycobacterial infections. He successfully purified a specific urinary antigen, produced antibodies to it, and formatted the assays in both ELISA and ICT formats. After licensing the antibodies to a major diagnostic company, Dr. Koulchin joined EnviroLogix to begin a new challenge in agricultural diagnostics, and to apply his knowledge of nucleic acid analysis to rapid tests for DNA detection.
