Environmental Event Turns Into 'Crime Scene' Clean-Up

Volunteers Rid River of Two Tonnes in Illegally Tossed Trash

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Sept. 12, 2013) - 1-800 RID-OF-IT, one of Canada's leading national rubbish removal companies, just wrapped up its third Humber River Clean Up event yesterday, removing a shocking two tonnes of garbage from the waters and shoreline of the Humber River. This years haul successfully doubled their past record of one tonne.

Among the discarded debris of plastic water bottles, unidentified metal grates, TV's, car seats, port-a-potty doors and a gaming chair came one item that may not be as misplaced as the others. Carefully wound into a tightly sealed glass bottle was a three page penned letter, written in Polish.

"The sheer volume of illegal dumping in the area is making this beautiful, natural oasis a crime scene," said Rick Crawford, President of 1-800 RID-OF-IT. "We could have kept going for another five hours with the amount of debris just under the surface and we'll be back in 2014, bigger and better to keep the trash at bay."

The Humber River Clean Up was created by 1-800 RID-OF-IT President Rick Crawford, a Bloor West resident and keen kayaker. This fire fighter decided to take action while being forced to dodge discarded debris while paddling in the area. Having coordinated the grassroots event for several years now, Rick is determined to keep up the clean up for as many years as it will take to ensure his kids will have a safe place to paddle in the future.
