Environmental Stewardship Organization Secures Preeminent Sustainability Certification

Call2Recycle Receives R2:2013 Standard; Remains First Battery Recycling Group to Be R2/ISO Certified

ATLANTA, GA--(Marketwired - December 04, 2014) - Organizations committed to recycling batteries can remain assured that their collection efforts adhere to the strictest and most up-to-date standard for environmental safety and social responsibility by partnering with Call2Recycle, Inc. North America's most comprehensive consumer battery recycling program announced today that the latest version of the Responsible Recycling Practices Standard (R2) certification, R2:2013, has been issued to Call2Recycle, Inc. R2 is the highest achievable standard for recycling organizations to obtain.

The prestigious recognition, which was first issued to Call2Recycle in 2012 under the R2:2008 standard, ensures that certificate holders meet stringent requirements in areas of environmental and public health, worker health and safety. Certification affirms that Call2Recycle's management of the collection and distribution to downstream processors for the recycling of batteries and cell phones meets the R2 standard requirements.

"On behalf of our collection partners we are proud to be recognized with the R2:2013 certification for our comprehensive accountability and adherence to the highest standards covering environmental, health and safety, and data security practices. This level of third-party validation sends a message to our industry stewards and municipal partners that Call2Recycle is committed to achieving the highest environmental standards in North America," said Carl Smith, CEO & president of Call2Recycle, Inc.

Two important prerequisites for achieving R2:2013 status are to meet requirements put forth in ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. These additional thresholds map out a framework that an organization can follow to set up an effective environmental management and occupational health and safety system. They are maintained respectively by the International Organization for Standardization and the Occupational Health and Safety Advisory Services bodies.

The R2 standard, which is recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and administered by Sustainable Electronics Recycling International (SERI) is a set of voluntary principles and guidelines designed to promote and assess responsible practices for electronics recyclers. R2 requirements include a management system that is accountable for practices affecting worker health and safety, security, the environment, and the downstream management, both domestically and internationally, of end-of-life electronic material and equipment, including cell phones and batteries. More information about R2 certification is available at http://www.sustainableelectronics.org. Call2Recycle is funded by product manufacturers across the globe committed to the environmentally-sound recycling of batteries and cell phones.
