Enviroservice Station Officially Opens in Strathcona County

STRATHCONA COUNTY, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - April 23, 2016) - The Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, joined today with Estefania Cortes-Vargas, MLA for Strathcona-Sherwood Park, and her Worship Roxanne Carr, Mayor of Strathcona County, to officially open the Broadview Enviroservice Station.

This station is a new permanent drop-off location for Strathcona County residents to discard household materials in a safe and environmentally-friendly way. Friendly and knowledgeable staff are on hand at the station to educate and assist residents in disposing of toxic and hazardous materials, including paint, motor oil, aerosols and electronics. In addition, the station has recycle, brush and yard waste bins and offers tire recycling services, making it a one-stop, eco-friendly-shop.

Previously, the County held 12 drop-off events per year from May to October for residents.

The new station is already proving to be a key element in the County's strategy to reduce waste going to the landfill. Since the doors first opened on February 18, 4,080 cars have visited the station - a 40% increase from the 2,853 users at the scheduled Enviroservice community events in 2015. To date, residents have brought in 531 televisions, 15,678 litres of oil and 425 computers.

• The Government of Canada provided $4 million towards this project through the federal Gas Tax Fund (GTF).
• Strathcona County provided the remainder of the funds, with a total project budget of $6.3 million.
