Enviroservice Station Officially Opens in Strathcona County

New station a key element in County's strategy to reduce landfill waste

STRATHCONA COUNTY, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - April 23, 2016) - The Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, joined today with Estefania Cortes-Vargas, MLA for Strathcona-Sherwood Park, and her Worship Roxanne Carr, Mayor of Strathcona County, to officially open the Broadview Enviroservice Station.

This station is a new permanent drop-off location for Strathcona County residents to discard household materials in a safe and environmentally-friendly way. Friendly and knowledgeable staff are on hand at the station to educate and assist residents in disposing of toxic and hazardous materials, including paint, motor oil, aerosols and electronics. In addition, the station has recycle, brush and yard waste bins and offers tire recycling services, making it a one-stop, eco-friendly-shop.

Previously, the County held 12 drop-off events per year from May to October for residents.

The new station is already proving to be a key element in the County's strategy to reduce waste going to the landfill. Since the doors first opened on February 18, 4,080 cars have visited the station - a 40% increase from the 2,853 users at the scheduled Enviroservice community events in 2015. To date, residents have brought in 531 televisions, 15,678 litres of oil and 425 computers.

"Through the federal Gas Tax Fund, the Government of Canada is allowing communities in Alberta, and all across Canada, to make informed decisions about their infrastructure investments and how best to spend federal dollars. Strathcona County's new Enviroservice Station is a great example of the front-line efforts Canadian municipalities are making to address climate change and make our communities healthier places to live."

The Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities

"We must take action at all levels - federally, provincially and locally - to create a more sustainable, and environmentally friendly future for Canadian families. The Alberta government is pleased to support infrastructure investments, such as Strathcona County's Enviroservice Station, to help reduce waste, build stronger, healthier communities and make every day Earth Day."

The Honourable Danielle Larivee, Minister of Alberta Municipal Affairs

"Thank you to our government partners for your contributions to making Strathcona County one of Canada's most livable communities. This facility is a key element in our strategy to provide collection services that are safe, convenient and reduce waste from going to the landfill. Our community is among the leaders in recycling efforts - and our residents are rightly proud of their work to divert as much waste as possible from the landfills. We know that every item counts toward that effort."

Roxanne Carr, Mayor, Strathcona County
