About the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge Seismic Retrofit

(for the State of California Department of Transportation, Caltrans)

The seismic retrofit for this four-mile-long bridge was an extremely complicated project involving the retrofit of the bridge's steel structure and foundations. The extensive structural steel retrofit added over thirty-one million pounds of steel to the existing structure, including the strengthening of the bridge's truss components and tower legs, the installation of special moment resisting pier frames, the installation of seismic isolation bearings, viscous dampers, and seismic restrainers. The bridge foundation retrofit entailed extremely complicated underwater operations including the installation of pre-cast concrete jackets around the existing piers, the installation of new precast pile cap foundations, and cast-in-place piles at the bridge towers, and the installation of steel casing at the existing bell foundations.

Innovative design and construction methods have been implemented in retrofitting the bridge to avoid collapse during a major earthquake. The bridge is located between the San Andreas and Hayward faults and, without a retrofit, was vulnerable to a major seismic event. The bridge has a vertical clearance of 185 feet, spans two shipping channels and supports 60,000 daily commuters. It is 20,000 feet long and 200 feet above the San Francisco Bay.
