EQUS Vindicated-Rural Alberta Wins With Both Recent Arbitration Ruling and Court Decision

INNISFAIL, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - Nov. 20, 2013) - EQUS REA Ltd., the largest member-owned utility in Canada, is pleased with the unanimous decision of the Panel hearing the Subdivision Arbitration between EQUS and FortisAlberta that confirms the "overall objective of the 1997 Agreement and governing legislation….is that the consumer has a choice concerning their service provider."

EQUS vigorously defended the rural consumers' right to choose EQUS when FortisAlberta filed yet another arbitration challenging EQUS' rights within EQUS' own service area.

This is a win for rural Alberta as EQUS has consistently demonstrated, year after year, that EQUS members save on distribution costs by being members of EQUS versus a customer of a for-profit utility company. In 2012, EQUS member savings were in excess of $11.5 million - that means $11.5 million remained in the hands of rural Albertans to spend in rural Alberta.

EQUS was also forced to seek the assistance of the Alberta Courts in moving forward to terminate this outdated agreement it has with FortisAlberta and arbitrate the terms of a new integrated operations agreement.

EQUS will work diligently to ensure the new agreement focuses on efficient and safe operations of the integrated electric distributions systems of both companies.

EQUS has delivered quality electrical services to rural Alberta for over half a century and will continue to protect rural Albertans' rights and their choice in the electric utility that provides their distribution services.
