ET Water Launches HermitCrab Universal Smart Controller for Commercial Irrigation Market

Converts Most Brands of Conventional Controllers to Web-Based ETwater Smart Irrigation; Plug and Play Installation and Remote Management Make Saving Water Easier Than Ever

NOVATO, CA--(Marketwire - December 6, 2010) -  ET Water Systems, Inc., the leader in smart irrigation control and efficient landscape water conservation and management solutions, today launched the HermitCrab™, a universal smart controller that upgrades most brands of inefficient conventional irrigation controllers to ETwater smart irrigation to improve water efficiency and control for the commercial irrigation market. ET Water is showcasing the HermitCrab and its award-winning smart irrigation offerings in booth number 1845 at the Irrigation Show 2010 through December 7, 2010 at the Phoenix Convention Center in Arizona.

The HermitCrab is a small, self-contained weatherproof unit that easily connects to a broad range of existing conventional irrigation controllers, immediately converting them into smart controllers that operate on ET Water's award-winning web service to efficiently and remotely manage landscape irrigation. With typical installation time of 10 minutes or less, and using the existing conventional controller as a "host," the HermitCrab connects wirelessly to the ET Water web servers to obtain customized daily watering schedules based on unique evapotranspiration (ET) computations and landscape requirements, and communicate the irrigation commands to and through the host controller. Additionally, HermitCrab is compatible with the ET Water QuickDraw service, allowing users to instantly turn irrigation systems and valves on and off from their computers or their smartphones.

Lawn and landscape irrigation wastes up to 1.5 billion gallons of water every day and accounts for 40% to 60% of all urban and suburban water use. "Water is one of our most and precious natural resources and we need to take a more environmentally conscientious approach to managing and reducing our nation's water consumption where it is the highest and most expensive -- outdoors," said Pat McIntyre, CEO of ET Water Systems. "Through the use of smart irrigation controllers, landscaping water use can be drastically reduced while maintaining and even improving landscapes. HermitCrab is a groundbreaking approach to saving money, labor, installation, and water use by upgrading inefficient controllers across the board while promoting community-wide water conservation best practices."

The ETwater™ Manager smart irrigation solution combines state-of-the-art horticulture science with proprietary web-based technology to automate the scheduling and management of irrigation systems for commercial, municipal and residential landscapes. Water is applied to landscapes based on current weather conditions and specific landscape factors, including plant type, soil type, slope and sun/shade conditions to reduce water consumption by 20 to 50 percent or more while improving landscape quality and reducing runoff pollution. In addition to HermitCrab, ET Water manufactures SmartBox™ smart controllers and SmartWorks™ retrofit panels, all of which share the ETwater Manager software interface.

HermitCrab is compatible with today's conventional irrigation controllers including Hunter®, Irritrol®, Rain Bird®, Rain Master®, and Superior/Sterling™. The box plugs into a conventional controller via its remote control access port. The customer configures stations online with the award-winning ETwater Manager, and the ETwater server combines this site information with current local weather data to generate a custom watering schedule. Via wireless modem, the weather-adjusted schedule is downloaded daily from the server to the HermitCrab, which signals the conventional controller to open and close valves.
