ETFO ACCLAIMS FIRST VICE-PRESIDENT

Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, Education Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 15, 2005) - David Clegg, a teacher with the York Region District School Board, was acclaimed first vice-president of the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) for a second term today. Clegg was first elected to the provincial executive in 1999.

"At this time a year ago, elementary teachers were at a crossroads. Today the path we are on is clear. The success of Campaign 200 has united ETFO members in common cause - to end the disparity in working conditions between elementary and secondary teachers and close the funding gap between the two panels," Clegg told the meeting's 600 delegates. "We must continue to improve and protect the working conditions of all members to enhance their professional and personal lives," said Clegg.

"I believe that our greatest asset as a federation is the principles our members hold. Your strength is our strength and together we will build a public education system that meets the needs of our members and of our students," Clegg said.

Clegg began his teaching career in 1992 and since that time has taught grades 6, 7, and 8. In 1998, as local chief negotiator in York Region, he held a key position through that year's turbulent lockout (the first in Ontario for public elementary teachers) and subsequent strike. He went on to serve as president of the York Region ETFO Local.

The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) represents 65,000 public elementary school teachers and education workers across Ontario and is the largest teacher union in Canada outside of Quebec.
