ETFO Awards Presented

Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, Education Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 15, 2006) - President Emily Noble today presented awards to ETFO members and non-members who have made an outstanding contribution to children and their communities.

In presenting the awards, President Emily Noble said that "we often forget to recognize those who improve our lives, the lives of the students we teach, and the lives of people in the communities in which we live."

Kaysandra Curtis of Windsor, Ontario, received the 2006 award for Women Working in Social Activism on behalf of Women and Children for her work promoting literacy.

Lakehead Teacher Local member, Ellen Chambers-Picard received the 2006 ETFO Humanitarian Award for an ETFO member for her advocacy on behalf of gay students and their treatment in schools.

Author Deborah Ellis received Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario Children's Literature Award for her book Three Wishes: Palestinian and Israeli Children Speak.

Ian Naisbitt is the recipient of the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario Humanitarian Award for a Non-Member. Nominated by the Greater Essex County Teacher Local, Naisbitt was recognized for his work cleaning up the Little River and his leadership of a $3.5 million project examining air quality.

The ETFO 2006 Annual Meeting continues until August 17 at the Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto.

The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario represents 70,000 public elementary teachers and education workers across Ontario and is the largest teacher federation in Canada outside Quebec.
