ETFO Awards Upper Canada Teacher

ETFO Humanitarian Award for Upper Canada Teacher Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, Education Editor, News Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 16, 2005) -
The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) today honoured Douglas Helmer, a secondary school teacher from Upper Canada, for taking education to the underprivileged, disabled children of India.

ETFO President Emily Noble presented the Humanitarian Award for a non-ETFO Member to Helmer at the organization's Annual Meeting in Toronto. The award is granted each year to an individual or a group, who do not hold ETFO membership and have given outstanding service to education and the community. Helmer was nominated by the Upper Canada Teacher Local.

"Since 1999, Douglas has taken three unpaid leaves of absence from his job as a secondary school teacher in order to travel to India and work with the teachers and students of Shubham School for the deaf and blind in the state of Bihar," Noble told the delegates. "Without his efforts, those children might not receive an education," Noble said.

"He has worked selflessly and tirelessly to develop strong partnerships between Rotary International, CIDA, SchoolNet, the CNIB, schools for the blind and deaf in Belleville, the Shubham school, and the Upper Canada District School Board," Noble said

"In addition to his work in India, Douglas serves as the co-chair of the board's global education committee. His personal motto is 'many hands make light work' and his efforts to forge partnerships that make a tangible difference in the lives of so many have been the personification of this motto," Noble said.

The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario represents 65,000 elementary public school teachers and education workers across Ontario and is the largest teacher union in Canada outside of Quebec.
