Ethanol Facts Favour the Environment

Reality Check on Misrepresentations in Canadian Press Wire Story

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - March 31, 2007) - The Canadian Press today misrepresented the facts about biofuels stating that "federal government's massive investments in biofuels will be of little benefit in cutting dependence on fossil fuels or reducing greenhouse emissions." This is factually inaccurate. Here the facts based on scientific research.

FACT: ETHANOL REDUCES HARMFUL GREENHOUSE GASES

The use of 10% ethanol blends reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 18-29% compared with conventional gasoline, according to Argonne National Laboratory (University of Chicago and the U.S. Department of Energy).

FACT: CANADA'S RENEWABLE FUEL STANDARD WILL REDUCE GHG EMISSIONS BY OVER 4.2 MEGA-TONNES

The government's new regulation requiring 5% renewable content in gasoline and 2% renewable content in diesel fuel by 2010 will reduce GHG emissions by over 4.2 mega-tonnes, which is the equivalent of taking over 1 million cars off the road each and every year.

FACT: ETHANOL LOWERS AIR POLLUTION

Ethanol contains 35 per cent oxygen. Increasing the percentage of oxygen in gasoline results in more complete combustion. This reduces the amount of harmful carbon monoxide emissions. Ethanol also displaces the use of toxic gasoline components such as benzene, a carcinogen. Ethanol is non-toxic, water soluble and quickly biodegradable.

FACT: GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT & A NEW RENEWABLE ECONOMY

Properly implemented, the new renewable fuels standard will lead to over 20 new world-class biofuels facilities in Canada, create over 14,000 new jobs in rural communities, and provide a new market for over 200 million bushels of Canadian grains and oilseeds.
