ETI Software Adds Digital Ad Insertion Support With VideoDirect 6000

NORCROSS, GEORGIA--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 9, 2005) -

- Added functionality meets growing need for digital tier ad insertion -

ETI Software Solutions, Inc. (ETI) (www.etisoftware.com), a leading provider of automated, flow-through service activation software, has added digital ad insertion support to its industry-leading VideoDirect ad insertion system.

ETI's latest enhancement to VideoDirect addresses the growing requirements for ad insertion functionality for digital tier channels. ETI's VideoDirect 6000 Server works in conjunction with networks deploying either analog, digital program insertion (DPI) or a combination of both. It uses the same architecture for local or network endpoint applications, using standard VOD Servers for ad storage and streaming or its own host server. Interfaces between ETI's ad server and the Video Splicer are SCTE compliant.

"As video networks become more complex and provide additional services, such as high-speed Internet access and VoIP, digital tiers are replacing traditional analog tiers to save critical bandwidth," says Pete Pifer, President and CEO, ETI Software. "There is also a growing need for networks to provide targeted advertising on a regional basis to outlying cities or neighborhoods, and perhaps in the future, to an individual home, using DPI technology and video edge servers at remote locations."

Digital TV signals from national networks contain imbedded cue tone information that tells the system precisely where to insert the scheduled local advertising material. These cue tones are typically sent out six seconds in advance of the true insertion time. The appropriate network signals are routed through the DPI equipment that detects the cue tone; it relays this information to the VideoDirect 6000 server through the network.

VideoDirect contains the scheduled ad information, as with analog insertion, it has been scheduled to play. Through the IP connections it will execute an ad "delivery" by starting an MPEG stream from the MPEG Video Streamer or VOD server. Once the stream has started, the DPI is commanded by VideoDirect to start insertion of the local advertisement in place of the network advertisement on the "cable" channel under control.

"Not only does VideoDirect address the growing digital requirements for local ad insertion, but it also retains support for analog channels," adds Pifer. "This helps service providers making a gradual transition to an all-digital universe without hefty capital technology expenditures."
