ETRI Drives 4G/LTE Infrastructure With Metaswitch MPLS-TP

ETRI and Metaswitch Extend Relationship to Address 4G/LTE Carrier Ethernet / Packet-Optical Transport System (P-OTS) Requirements

LONDON--(Marketwire - October 5, 2010) -  4G/LTE networks place major bandwidth and management demands on wireless backhaul and backbone networks. To respond to those requirements, ETRI is working with Metaswitch to build Carrier Ethernet / Packet-Optical Transport System (P-OTS) systems that use MPLS Transport Profile (MPLS-TP).

ETRI and Metaswitch have been working together since 2004, principally in the area of optical switching systems, using Metaswitch's MPLS and IP Routing network software products. This initiative extends that very successful partnership into the packet-optical arena, enabling ETRI to develop MPLS-TP systems that support both packet and optical networks, to provide unified transport capabilities across both wireless backhaul and backbone networks, with resilience and manageability, while providing familiar QoS, protection and restoration, and OAM capabilities.

"4G/LTE is going to require a major overhaul of Korean wireless networks, forcing a migration to MPLS-TP Carrier Ethernet / P-OTS systems," said Dr. Tae Whan Yoo, Director in ETRI's Optical Internet Department. "We've been very happy with the relationship with Metaswitch, and extending it to include MPLS-TP will help us drive that migration over the next few years."

"We're seeing immense market momentum behind MPLS-TP as wireless providers look to deploy 4G/LTE," said Clive Partridge, General Manager of Metaswitch's Network Technologies Division. "We are very happy to continue working with ETRI as they build MPLS-TP systems that help providers successfully build and manage 4G/LTE networks."

Metaswitch has developed portable network protocol source code based on its N-BASE portability technology for over 25 years. The company's industry leading VoIP / IMS, Session Border Controller, MPLS, and IP Routing (unicast and multicast) solutions are architected to handle the scale and reliability requirements of the most demanding applications while providing extensibility and a full feature set. The portability and feature richness of the N-BASE protocol products, plus superb engineering and exceptional support, provide communications suppliers with an unrivaled technical solution that reduces engineering cost and greatly improves time to market.
