ETS Acquires Assets of Assessment Training Institute (ATI)

Combination Broadens ETS's Products and Services in K-12 Education Market

PRINCETON, NJ -- (MARKET WIRE) -- March 8, 2006 -- ETS, the world's leading educational measurement and research organization, announced today that it has acquired the assets of Assessment Training Institute (ATI), which specializes in helping educators improve student achievement by integrating classroom assessment with day-to-day instruction.

ATI, based in Portland, Oregon, provides research-based professional development to teachers and school leaders to improve their use of formative assessment in the classroom to support student learning. ATI offers conferences and seminars, school improvement professional services, and professional development programs that rely on texts and workbooks, interactive training videos, instructional DVDs, train-the-trainer programs, school leadership seminars, and on-site consulting and training.

"The talented staff at ATI is dedicated to making a difference in classrooms through a particular approach to formative assessment that is highly compatible with ETS's work in the K-12 market," says ETS President and CEO Kurt Landgraf. "Best of all, ATI is focused on maximizing student achievement by building students' confidence in themselves as learners and supporting teachers as they develop quality day-to-day classroom assessments."

"ATI's people and products will broaden ETS's educational solutions, including minute-to-minute assessment for learning in the classroom, periodic benchmark testing to validate and adjust instruction, and high-stakes summative state assessments," says John Oswald, Senior Vice President of Elementary and Secondary Education at ETS.

"It is our mission to empower educators to develop and use quality assessments in the classroom, connect standards to classroom learning targets, and integrate assessment into instruction to maximize learning," says Richard Stiggins, CEO of ATI. "We call this approach 'assessment FOR learning.' It allows teachers to assess far more effectively and efficiently, communicate effectively about student achievement, and motivate students by helping them become responsible partners in the assessment process. The result is profound achievement gains for all students, but especially low achievers. We look forward to becoming part of ETS's rich traditions."

ATI will be integrated into ETS's Elementary and Secondary Education strategic business unit as an imprint called "The ETS National Assessment Training Institute," under which the company will place its assessment-focused professional development products, including parts of the Pathwise® Series of professional development programs for school leaders and teachers.
