Evelyn Farha, Honourary President of the Farha Foundation and Mother of Late Son Ron, Sets the Bar High and Invites Participants to Walk with her in CA MARCHE 2013

88 year-old sets fundraising goal of $15,000

MONTRÉAL, QUÉBEC--(Marketwired - Sept. 17, 2013) - The Farha Foundation, Quebec's leading HIV/AIDS fundraising organization, and Honourary President, Evelyn Farha invites you to lead the change by walking on September 29 in the 21st edition of ÇA MARCHE, Quebec's largest walk for the cause. Evelyn recognizes that there are many important causes and has chosen to dedicate her energy to the Farha Foundation not only in support of her late son Ron but also for the many others that have fallen to this disease and the desire for a world without AIDS.

"AIDS can affect us all. It has no boundaries," said Mrs. Farha. "I speak to many young adults that believe that HIV/AIDS is a disease of the past and that there is a cure. We need to teach them that there is NO cure and that this disease is preventable. I cannot bring my son back. So I walk in ÇA MARCHE to make a difference, for my children, grandchildren and our community and hope that you will too."

Since 1992, 76 organizations across Quebec have benefited from the Farha Foundation's contribution. "The support that our Aids Service Organization has received over the years has allowed us to grow and focus on the changing needs of people living with HIV," said Gary Lacasse, Executive Director at Maison Plein Coeur, a community organization dedicated to the prevention of HIV/AIDS and to promote health. "ÇA MARCHE is and will always be our sacred place where all who are affected by HIV have a common place where we can remember our losses, show the world that HIV still exists and that people are LIVING with HIV. I look forward to the day that HIV will be eradicated."

To date, over $9 million has been raised and distributed by the Farha Foundation for education and prevention initiatives. They also provide assistance for direct care services, medication and medical supplies, food and hygiene products, outpatient services and housing. ÇA MARCHE year, after year, represents the largest contribution to the Farha Foundation's partnering charities. Click here to see where the money goes.

"As long as people living with HIV/AIDS are marginalized, these individuals, many of whom would be self-sufficient under normal circumstances, are forced to live in poverty and exclusion, according to Thérèse Richer, MIELS-Québec's Director General. For over 25 years, MIELS-Quebec has provided the Quebec with information and support in the fight against HIV/AIDS. "Farha's financial contribution and warmth has supported the nutritional requirements of some 150 people that we serve annually and we are thankful for this."

AIDS Community Care (ACC) Montreal, a volunteer-based community organization working to enhance the quality of life of people living with HIV/AIDS, to prevent HIV transmission, and to promote community awareness and action envisions a society free from the stigma of HIV/AIDS. Executive Director Michael Foster says "we are proud to be walking in ÇA MARCHE for the 21st consecutive year to demonstrate that the AIDS crisis is not over. ÇA MARCHE, and the money it raises are more important than ever in a climate of declining government funding and the misperceived notion that AIDS/HIV is a "manageable" disease. "

Please join Evelyn, Gary, Thérèse, Michael and the some 3,000 walkers on September 29 in the streets of downtown Montreal and LEAD THE CHANGE! "I am hopeful that your continued presence and contribution will eventually help eradicate this terrible disease," continued Evelyn Farha. "I may have set my goals high at $15,000 but every dollar counts. So please, walk with us so that one day we can truly say that this is a disease of the past."

ÇA MARCHE (camarche.ca), one of the first Farha Foundation events to emerge in 1993, is an annual walkathon of seven kilometres, gathering thousands of people to fundraise and increase awareness for the HIV/AIDS cause.

To maximize awareness of the event, the Farha Foundation asks you to spread the word to as many people as possible. In doing so, you will contribute directly to helping those living with HIV/AIDS, a disease that currently infects as many as two people a day in Quebec. Bring your family and friends to inspire our community to support the cause. Sign up now at www.camarche.ca.
