Even Online Banking Customers Stop for the Queen's Speech on Christmas Day

Whilst 3,000 people were doing their online banking at midnight on New Year's Eve

LONDON, ENGLAND--(Marketwired - Dec. 30, 2013) - With the growth of internet and mobile banking and the 24/7 nature of online shopping it's no wonder than more than 100,000 people logged on to Nationwide's internet bank last Christmas Day, according to new figures released by the building society.

However, despite the fact that tens of thousands of people chose to check their finances on 25th December, one Christmas Day tradition remained strong - customers logged off in their droves by 3pm, in time for the Queen's Speech. The number of online user fell to a daytime low of just under 4,000 at 3pm compared to the high point of around 7,500 users at 10am.

A further 55,000 people used Nationwide's mobile banking app to check their finances on Christmas Day, making combined total of 155,000 users. Although much lower than the 700,000 people who make use of Nationwide's digital banking options on an average day, it's still a sizeable number of festive customers.

By comparison New Year's Eve was much busier, with a combined total of 550,000 people using Nationwide's internet and mobile banking options, falling to a combined total of 400,000 on New Year's Eve. What's really surprising is that around 3,000 people were actually logged on to the internet bank at midnight on New Year's Eve as most people ushered in 2013.

Paul Cooper, Nationwide's Head of Digital Banking, says: "Whilst the traditional image of Christmas Day is a time for opening presents and relaxing with family and friends, our figures show that people still want to check their finances and do their banking. The development of innovations such as our internet bank and mobile banking app mean that if customers do choose to bank on Christmas Day, they can do it quickly and easily and at a time that suits them."
