Expo Latino: Calgary's Hottest Music Festival, Expo Latino, Celebrates 15th Anniversary

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Aug. 19, 2011) - The initial festival in 1997 was only one day and a few vendors at the Eau Claire festival market. The organizers decided to produce Expo Latino again and over the course of the next few years, enjoyed unparallel success. The festival grew to two days and had to move to Olympic Plaza a few years later. Now a three day celebration set to take place in the biggest festival venue in the city for the 5th year and brings world class Latin entertainment to Calgary. Artistic Director Carmen Galvez attributes the increasing public interest to the fact this city is constantly evolving. "Calgary is starting to live up to its name as the 'New West'," she insists, " We go and enjoy our Stampede, but also embrace, experience and celebrate different cultures."

Expo Latino is proud to announce it has become one of the largest festivals in Calgary and Canada's leading Latin festival.

Expo Latino remains the liveliest festival this city has to offer. "The key to success has been the focus on music and bringing the best Latin performers to Calgary," explains Galvez, "you feel like you are at a celebration in Latin America when you come to Prince's Island Park." The formula of quality entertainment, food vendors, arts market, beer gardens and the representation of all Latin countries is what makes Expo Latino the biggest festival of its kind in Canada.

The famous custom made dance floor in the audience is a major contributing factor to the energy of Expo Latino. "Some festivals are known for sitting and enjoying the atmosphere, but dancing is a huge part of our culture so there is no sitting in front of the stage," Galvez adds, "That just wouldn't happen. The performers interact with the audience and expect audience reciprocation."

This year's festival's world class Latin performers include, Latin Grammy nominated Michael Stuart, Cheka, Wil Campa, worlds #1 merengue band Grupo Mania and Juno Award winning Compadres featuring Oscar Lopez and James Keelaghan. There are also many performers from around Canada and Calgary set to take the stage throughout the weekend.

Salsa Fever kicks off the weekend with a showcase of over 100 salsa dancers choreographed by Eric and Kelly who are featured on So You Think You Can Dance Canada and placed 4th at the World Professional Salsa Championships. Closing the show is returning favourite, Wil Campa.

Expo Latino 2011 will take place August 26th – 28th at Prince's Island Park. Weekend passes are only $25 and available at all Calgary Co-op stores or expolatino.ca. Daily passes at the gate. Free admission for seniors over 65 and children under 12.
