Express Metrix Releases Latest Version of Award-Winning IT Asset Management Solution

Express Software Manager Version 8.0 Adds Enhanced Metering, Security, and Administrative Features to Further Strengthen Its License Compliance, Software Metering and PC Inventory Capabilities

SEATTLE, WA--(Marketwire - November 28, 2007) - Express Metrix®, a leader in IT asset management solutions, today announced the release of Express Software Manager 8.0, which includes enhanced software metering functionality and reporting, expanded security and administrative features, and broad support for industry-standard technologies including Vista, 64-bit clients, and HTTPS data transmission. These features, which build upon Express Software Manager's industry-acclaimed PC inventory and software metering capabilities, enable IT departments to demonstrate greater accountability in maintaining compliance with licensing agreements, reducing IT spending and overhead, and improving data security.

The most notable new features of Express Metrix Software Manager 8.0 are the updated application control capabilities, which will prove particularly invaluable to organizations with concurrently licensed applications (software that can be installed on many machines, but is licensed to run only a specific number of those machines simultaneously). According to Jeff Kelsey, Express Metrix Vice President of Products and Services, "Users running concurrently licensed applications often have to wait for licenses to become available. We've addressed this issue with Express Software Manager 8.0 by allowing users to be placed on a 'wait list,' terminating use of applications that sit idle for a specified period of time, and notifying wait-listed users when a license becomes available."

Howard Weiner, chief information officer at the United States Merchant Marine Academy, cited the metering capabilities of Express Software Manager as the perfect solution for extending students' access to critical -- and costly -- maritime simulation software, while ensuring that no more licenses are simultaneously in use than the organization's licensing agreement permits. By using Express Software Manager to control concurrent usage, he is able to provide students access to these applications via their own laptops, rather than dedicating fixed classroom-based computing resources to ensure usage limits are not exceeded.

"Without a way to control software usage from students' laptops, we would have had to purchase dedicated PCs to run the application. Given the high student demand for this particular software, we would have been looking at an initial investment of $50-60,000 in hardware and set-up costs per classroom, which would need to be upgraded every 3 to 4 years," said Weiner.

The feedback and needs of military and government clients like the United States Merchant Marine Academy were drivers for another stand-out feature of Express Metrix Software Manager 8.0: improved security. The inventory and usage data sent by the Express client is now encrypted over an HTTPS connection to ensure secure transfer of information. In addition, Express Metrix has bolstered Express Software Manager's administrative features to provide greater control over access to IT asset data collected by the product. Administrators now have the ability to determine who can access the product's administrative console, and which specific data they can view and modify. In addition, any configuration changes made by users are compiled into reports that can be easily reviewed by the administrator.

Express Software Manager 8.0 also expands upon the types of hardware devices the product is capable of tracking. For example, administrators can now import information on devices such as routers and switches so they are included in comprehensive hardware inventory reports, providing a complete snapshot of an organization's hardware assets.

Express Software Manager offers one of the most comprehensive and accurate software identification databases in the industry, the Express Software Identification Database (ESID)™. This software recognition engine powers Express Software Manager's highly accurate PC inventory and application usage reports, and is licensed by numerous top-tier software vendors including BMC, Tivoli and New Boundary for use within their own IT asset management products. The high degree of precision offered by the ESID enables administrators to differentiate among software version numbers, suites (for example, Microsoft Office Professional vs. Standard editions), and executables with the same name (for example, SQL and MSDE). The ESID also automatically groups supporting files (such as Solitaire) under their "parent" applications (Windows OS), sparing administrators from the tedious task of sorting through cryptically-named files to determine their identities. As of the 8.0 product release, the ESID will recognize over 100,000 different application executables from more than 3,000 software vendors.
