Express Parcel Delivery Drivers Gear Up for Global Challenge With TNT

ATHERSTONE, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Oct. 27, 2009) - Some of the world's best truck drivers are descending on the UK and getting into top gear for a global challenge to decide who's the greenest and safest express parcel delivery driver.

Express delivery giant TNT will be hosting the event at the Motor Industry Research Association's (MIRA) headquarters in Warwickshire on Wednesday September 30 and pitting its best driver against counterparts from as far afield as the United States, Brazil, China and the Middle East.

The drivers will take to the tracks and go through a series of challenges designed to test their fuel efficiency, safety and customer service skills.

The 'Drive Me Challenge', now in its third year, is an important part of TNT's global environmental initiative, called Planet Me, with a goal of making TNT the world's first zero emission transport company.

Tom Bell, Regional Managing Director, TNT UK, said: "The Drive Me Challenge focuses on road safety, fuel efficiency performance and our service levels to customers. With the right driving behaviours, we know we can be the safest transport company on the road, significantly reduce our CO2 emissions and provide an excellent customer service.

"This competition is the ultimate recognition of the highest levels of driving performance and we're delighted to be hosting this year's challenge here in the UK.

"TNT research has shown that a single TNT pick up and delivery (PUD) driver can reduce their C02 emissions by as much as 25% by driving more efficiently, and this obviously brings down fuel consumption and associated costs. That's the idea behind the Drive Me Challenge - to increase awareness among our tens of thousands of drivers across the globe."

The Drive Me Challenge is part of TNT's comprehensive program to cut emissions, Planet Me. Including sub-contractors, operational vehicles are responsible for more than half of TNT's total CO2 emissions. With the Drive Me Challenge, the company expects to improve the overall fuel efficiency of its vehicle fleet by about 5%. For the participating countries, this would equate to a potential CO2 savings of about 18 kilotonnes and savings in fuel costs of more than one million Euros per year.
