Extension of Stewardship and Recreational Groundfish Fisheries for Newfoundland and Labrador

SAINT JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR--(Marketwire - Sept. 24, 2010) - Senator Fabian Manning, on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans issued the following statement today:

"The thoughts and prayers of all Canadians are with the residents of Newfoundland and Labrador during this difficult time. Our Government stands with the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. In the wake of Hurricane Igor, we understand that it may not be possible to get out and fish this coming weekend.

"Due to the impacts of the hurricane and lost fishing time as a result of severe weather conditions, I am announcing today that the cod stewardship fishery, which was due to close today, will be extended for a period of one week. As well, the recreational fishery will reopen for an extra weekend, the Thanksgiving long weekend, in addition to the time already announced. These extensions will allow Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who have been adversely affected by Hurricane Igor and its aftermath an opportunity to participate in these fisheries.

"Conservation and sustainability of this important stock remain our number one priority and as such we remind all fishers, both commercial and recreational, that the catch limits set in place must be respected. We recognize the importance of this fishery to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador and hope that all who wish to take advantage of this opportunity with family and friends will be able to do so safely and responsibly."
