Facebook The Most Popular Use of Smartphones Says Sony Ericsson

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Dec. 9, 2010) - Sony Ericsson has announced that the popularity of Facebook, coupled with the rising prominence of smartphones, has led to Facebook browsing becoming the most popular use of smartphones.

Increased smartphone sales have allowed more people access to social networks through their handsets. Coupled with the fact Facebook now has over 500 million users, it is now easier than ever before for users to access Facebook and pages therein, such as the official Sony Ericsson Facebook page.

Facebook recently announced it has over 200 million users that access the network through their handsets across various platforms. Given that only 65 million people accessed the site through the same means a year previously, this illustrates the growing influence of Facebook access through smartphones. Coupled with the continued introduction of new applications, such as Foursquare compatibility allowing users to 'check in' from various locations, this really appeals to users wishing to access social networks through their handsets.

Ben Padley, Head of Digital and CRM for Sony Ericsson, said: "With the prominence of both Facebook and smartphones having risen in recent times, the two can be integrated together and thereby offer a suitable platform for users to access their social networks online regardless of location. With advances in smartphone technology, as with the Sony Ericsson Xperia™ range on Android, users can engage in various different activities through their handsets, thereby raising their appeal."

Although Facebook is currently the most popular use of smartphones, Sony Ericsson users are reminded they can also access the Sony Ericsson Twitter profile and Sony Ericsson YouTube channel through applications on their smartphones.
