Fairfield County Plastic Surgeon Sheds Light on the Breast Augmentation Process

DARIEN, CT--(Marketwired - May 20, 2015) - According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 2014 saw breast augmentation continue its reign as the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure performed in the U.S. Dr. Fredric Newman, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Fairfield County, says breast augmentation's popularity is reflected at his practice, and he routinely sees women who are looking to add volume to the breasts with results that look natural. With the significant amount of interest in breast augmentation surgery, Dr. Newman says it is important that prospective patients who are considering the procedure have a thorough understanding of the choices they will need to make and what they can expect from the treatment process to ensure they are fully satisfied with the outcome.

When a patient comes in for her consultation, Dr. Newman performs a comprehensive physical examination and conducts a detailed discussion going over all aspects of the breast augmentation procedure. An inframammary incision is made in the natural crease located underneath the breast. He believes this technique allows him greater precision and accuracy when placing the implant, as well as a more balanced, symmetrical appearance to the breasts. The inframammary approach can be performed for both saline and silicone implants, and Dr. Newman says it often yields superior outcomes and very natural-looking results. Plus, he notes, scars from the incisions are typically well-hidden under the breast and are not often significantly detectable. While this may be his preferred approach, Dr. Newman says some patients are better served by other common incision techniques. He says the ideal option will be determined following the initial examination and discussion with the patient about her needs and goals.

Finally, Dr. Newman says, patients should have a clear understanding of what they can expect during recovery from breast augmentation. While many women are able to resume normal daily routines after about one week, Dr. Newman says patients should be prepared to take some time to rest and recuperate so the breasts can properly heal after surgery. He notes that some swelling and soreness will be present in the weeks following the breast augmentation procedure; however, pain medication can alleviate any significant discomfort. Dr. Newman says patients should also refrain from strenuous physical activity for at least four weeks after treatment.

He says patient education and honest communication about the patient's needs and goals is extremely important in order to create results that successfully enhance the breasts and complement overall body proportions.
