Family Literacy Day 2008

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 25, 2008) - The Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, issued the following statement to mark Family Literacy Day.

On Sunday, Canadians across the country will celebrate Family Literacy Day. Parents and caregivers play a vital role in promoting literacy and instilling the love of reading in children. On Family Literacy Day, it is important to recognize the efforts of the people who do just that.

The Government of Canada works collaboratively with provincial and territorial governments and other literacy and essential skills stakeholders to ensure that Canadians have the skills they need to build better and stronger futures.

Family literacy activities can help instil the love of reading and writing in children at a young age. This can, in turn, lay the foundation for higher education and career achievement in the future.

To mark Family Literacy Day, I encourage families and communities across the country to participate in activities aimed at promoting reading and learning.
