Farha Foundation Recognizes Women on International Women's Day

50% of HIV/AIDS cases in Quebec are amongst women and children

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - March 8, 2011) - The Farha Foundation, Quebec's largest HIV/AIDS fundraising organization, acknowledges the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day. On this day, the Farha Foundation reminds Quebecers that an estimated 50% of all HIV/AIDS patients in the province are women and children. Today, International Women's Day is being honoured globally in recognition of the many achievements made in women's rights history.

"Today marks 100 years of recognizing women's accomplishments around the world and for the Farha Foundation, it is also important to remember that many women are still living with HIV/AIDS," said Linda Farha, spokesperson of the Farha Foundation. "AIDS, for which prevention is the only cure, can affect us all and on this centennial, we encourage the province to join us in the fight aiming for a day to celebrate a time when this disease will be one of the past."

The events organized by the Farha Foundation serve to raise funds to help men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS in Quebec and to sensitize the population of the AIDS epidemic.

International Women's Day has been observed since the early 1900s and is a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies. Distinguished officially in March in 1911, celebrations today feature thousands of events held throughout the world to inspire women and recognize achievements.

The Farha Foundation is Quebec's leading fundraising organization committed to helping men, women and children living with HIV and AIDS. The events organized by the Farha Foundation also serve to raise public awareness of the AIDS pandemic.

Since 1992, the Farha Foundation has distributed over $8 million to 76 organizations throughout Quebec that provide care and services (housing, medication, food, palliative care, homecare, etc.), as well as AIDS prevention and education programs. An advisory committee determines which organizations the Foundation supports and ensures that the funds are put to the best possible use.
