Farha Foundation's CA MARCHE 2011 Raises Nearly $300,000

Around 4,500 people took to the streets of Montreal for the city's largest HIV/AIDS awareness walk

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Sept. 19, 2011) - Nearly 4,500 people came together on Sunday to show their solidarity for the men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS by taking part in the Farha Foundation's annual walkathon, ÇA MARCHE. Now in its 19th edition, the event was a success as participants raised almost $300,000 out of the Foundation's goal of $400,000. The fundraising campaign will continue until December 1, World AIDS Day.

Richard Deschamps, who stood in for Mayor Gérald Tremblay, as well as several artists were present on Sunday to offer their support including singers Colin Moore and Marie-Chantal Toupin. Those who attended were also treated to performances by À Pieds Levés, Isabelle Savoie École des Arts de la Scène, Club Bolo and Zuruba.

"The Foundation is grateful to all the participants who rallied for ÇA MARCHE 2011, and walked for the thousands of people who are touched by this relentless disease," stated Evelyn Farha, Honourary President of the Farha Foundation. "I am moved by the involvement from the local community, and I'm very pleased with the amount of money that was raised today."

Ron, the son of Mrs. Farha, founded the Farha Foundation in 1992. Having been diagnosed with AIDS a few years before; he noticed the absence of financial, medical and emotional support for those affected by this disease. All the net proceeds collected from ÇA MARCHE 2011 will be redistributed to the Foundation's 48 HIV/AIDS partner groups across Quebec.

"By having events like ÇA MARCHE, the Foundation hopes to educate the public about HIV and AIDS, so that the community can take the necessary steps that prevent them from contracting the disease," stated Mrs. Farha.

About ÇA MARCHE 2011

Parc Émilie-Gamelin was the site for the start and finish line of ÇA MARCHE 2011, which was held on Sunday, September 18. The two spokespersons for the walk, Cousin Vinny of Virgin Radio and Marie-Andrée Fallu of Rouge fm hosted the opening festivities that included a speech from Mrs. Farha and Mr. Deschamps. Before participants took to the streets, a fun aerobics routine was given by À Pieds Levés that got walkers moving, followed by a great performance by Moore and Toupin.

At 10:30 am, participants began the 7 kilometre walk and were entertained throughout the route with impressive dance performances by Isabelle Savoie École des Arts de la Scène and Club Bolo. St-James United Church kept participants motivated by giving free hugs to walkers passing in front of their building. Rounding out the festivities were the rhythmic drumbeats of percussion ensemble Zuruba, who played as walkers returned to the park.
