Farha Foundation's CA MARCHE a Huge Success

More Than 7,000 Walkers Raise Nearly $270,000 and it's Not Over...

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Sept. 20, 2010) - Editor's note: A photo will be available on Marketwire's website.

More than 7,000 people walked through the streets of Montreal yesterday in the Farha Foundation's annual ÇA MARCHE walk in support of people living with AIDS, those who have died of AIDS and for an AIDS-free future.

The 18th edition of this event brought together the community of Quebec, politicians and celebrities to raise nearly $270,000 out of a total goal of $450,000. The fundraising campaign will run until December 1, 2010, which is also World AIDS Day.

"I lack the words to express my thanks to the thousands of people who gave of their time, their energy and their money to support this incredible event," said Evelyn Farha, Honourary President of the Foundation. "I am pleased with this year's results and with the public commitment. My wish today is to raise the awareness of enough people to prevent at least one person from becoming HIV positive."

Montreal businessman, Ron Farha, founded the Farha Foundation in 1992. Diagnosed with AIDS a few years earlier, Ron's experience with the disease made him aware of the lack of financial, medical and emotional support available to people living with HIV and AIDS. With the help of generous sponsors, every dollar raised this year by ÇA MARCHE participants will be distributed to the 48 Quebec community organizations the Farha Foundation supports.

"When my son Ron was dying of AIDS, he asked me to continue what he started, thinking that a cure for HIV and AIDS would be found in just a few years," Evelyn Farha said. "Even though 18 years have passed without finding any cure for HIV or AIDS, with all the love and commitment being pledged today I am convinced that this terrible disease can, and will be conquered." The 18th edition of ÇA MARCHE, the largest fundraising HIV and AIDS campaign in Quebec, was held Sunday, September 19, 2010, starting at Parc Émilie-Gamelin, corner Sainte-Catherine East and Saint-Hubert streets, (Berri-UQAM métro) in Montreal, Quebec. The walk began at 10:30 a.m. and ended two hours later at the same location after participants had followed a 7-kilometre route through the streets of downtown Montreal.

This year's ÇA MARCHE brought together many well-known artists and politicians, including the event's two spokespersons, Valérie Simard and Vinny Barrucco, along with Montreal Mayor Gérald Tremblay and many more. Besides the support they received from the various cultural and political communities, participants enjoyed performances by Bruno Labrie, who recently launched his newest song, "Un millier," Colin Moore, Randi Katz, À Pied Levé, Les Chantres-Musiciens, Club Bolo, Free Hugs, Saint-James Church Choir, Studio Adonnics and Zaruba (Brazilian "tam-tam").
