Farmland Auction: Renick Family to Sell Kansas Cropland After More Than 120 Years

GARDEN CITY, KS--(Marketwire - September 14, 2010) -  For about 120 years, the Don Renick family has been farming and acquiring land in Gray and Finney counties near Garden City, Kan. But those days are coming to an end, as the family prepares to auction its land -- approximately 6,682 acres -- on Tuesday, Oct. 26. Schrader-Westchester auctions will manage the sale.

The land -- most of which is currently used for growing corn and dairy grade alfalfa -- includes approximately 5,600 contiguous acres and will sell in 27 tracts ranging in size from four acres to 803 acres. The property also includes three homes, as well as several buildings for shop space, office space and storage.

"Our family settled here in the late 1800s, and we've been farming or ranching here the entire time," said Mike Renick, who, along with other family members, has farmed the land all his life. "We've grown corn, alfalfa, wheat, sorghum, cotton, popcorn and sunflowers, as well as raising cattle. But each generation brings more family members with interests that draw them in different directions, and it's time to turn the page," he said.

The installation of irrigation pivots in the late 1960s and early 1970s marked a major turning point in the productivity of the land, according to Renick.

"This is truly the end of an era, but it creates a real opportunity for others to invest in quality farmland or expand their operations," said R.D. Schrader, president of the auction company. "The Renicks' property has 35 irrigated circles, with 16 fields of dairy quality alfalfa. There are also 240 acres of native pastureland along U.S. Highway 50/400, facilitating truck transport of grain. The property's proximity to Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway ensures excellent rail access as well," said Schrader.
