Faulty Fairy Lights Could Cause Havoc for Homeowners Warns Swinton

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Dec. 12, 2010) - Swinton Insurance is warning homeowners about using cheap or old fairy lights to decorate their homes this Christmas as these could be a fire hazard.

Swinton, the UKs largest high street retailer of home insurance issued the warning as this time of year sees an increase in fire damage to homes due to faulty Christmas lights. Swinton is offering the following advice to homeowners to ensure they have a fire hazard free Christmas.

  • If you re-use your fairy lights from previous years check to ensure there are no frayed wires.
  • Check new fairy lights carry the correct safety certifications
  • Don't buy cheap foreign imports that do not have the British standard safety mark
  • If you light festive candles always make sure they are extinguished before you go to bed
  • Keep candles away from children and pets and other decorations that could catch fire easily
  • Do not overload plug sockets
  • Always turn fairy lights and other electrical decorations off when you are leaving the house or before you go to bed
