FBU Calls For Conciliation To Avert Firefighters' Strike

LONDON, ENGLAND--(Marketwire - Sept. 24, 2010) - The Fire Brigades Union today called for conciliation in its dispute with the London Fire Brigade. The call was made by the London regional committee of the union.

"We want to be sure we have explored every possible way of resolving this dispute peacefully" said FBU general secretary Matt Wrack. "Our members are already conducting an overtime ban, and soon they may be on strike. I want to impress on the London Fire Brigade that we must not sit back and let events take their course. If we do that, the future is very bleak.

"We are therefore today offering to go to the National Joint Council joint secretaries in an attempt to find a way through.

"It's not going to be easy. When the Chief Fire Officer sent out those letters, starting the process of sacking all our members, he made it very difficult to find a solution that our members will accept. But we are going to do our best, and I ask Ron Dobson and his managers to do the same."
