FCC Drive Away Hunger Collects Over 1.7 Million Pounds of Food

REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN--(Marketwire - Oct. 19, 2010) - Farm Credit Canada's (FCC) Drive Away Hunger program finished the last leg of its annual four-week journey on Friday, October 15, with 1,773,688 pounds of food collected for food banks nationwide.

"This year's FCC Drive Away Hunger program was a great success. People from across Canada stepped up in a big way to help bring food to those who need it – the generosity we've seen has been truly overwhelming," says FCC President and CEO Greg Stewart. "FCC would like to thank FCC Drive Away Hunger partners and all Canadians who continue to rally together to support this program."

Six tractor tours took place in Alberta, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan and Regina (home to FCC's corporate office) from October 12 to 15. In addition, FCC collected food and cash donations in every office across Canada from September 20 to October 15.

Every year, FCC employees partner with local schools, businesses, community groups, residents and food banks to fight hunger in Canada. "We know that many people in Canada are unable to put food on the table every day. FCC Drive Away Hunger is about raising awareness of hunger and making a difference in communities across Canada," says Stewart.

Nearly 800,000 people use a Canadian food bank each month, and 37 per cent of those individuals are children. All of the food and money raised through the FCC Drive Away Hunger program goes directly to food banks across the country.

"I'm proud of FCC's ongoing efforts to not only support farmers, but to support all Canadians," says Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz. "Congratulations to everyone at FCC who helped deliver over a million pounds of food to Canadians who need it most."

"Food Banks Canada and its members are grateful for FCC's support of the food bank community in Canada. The FCC Drive Away Hunger program raises much needed public awareness of hunger and brings communities together in support of this cause," says Katharine Schmidt, executive director, Food Banks Canada.

FCC is donating $25,000 to Food Banks Canada to support the National Food Sharing System which acquires and shares industry food and consumer product donations among member food banks across the country.

Since 2004, FCC Drive Away Hunger tours have collected over five million pounds of food for food banks in Canada.
