FCD, UC Irvine's Merage Business School Announce Joint Director Education Program Targeted to Corporate Executives, New & Aspiring Board Members

NEWPORT BEACH, CA--(Marketwire - January 29, 2008) - Orange County's Forum for Corporate Directors (FCD) and The Paul Merage School of Business at UC Irvine today announced the offering of a joint director education course at UC Irvine that provides an education path for business people who are new to service on boards of directors and wish to hone their skills as well as for those who aspire to serve on corporate boards and need a solid educational foundation.

"This outstanding educational opportunity is ideal for C-level managers who are being groomed to work with or to join boards of directors, for new and aspiring directors, for successors or heirs to family-owned businesses, for individuals who wish to add governance training to their background and for non-financial directors who wish to enhance their financial knowledge," said John Rehfeld, FCD chairman.

"The course of study, which has been developed jointly by FCD and the Executive Education Department of the Merage School of Business, provides the fundamental body of knowledge to prepare people to be effective directors," Rehfeld added. "It provides a starting point to help individuals assess and develop their own training roadmap, to further their skills and to stay current on the ever-changing legal requirements of directorship."

The intensive program covers all aspects of what it takes to be a corporate director, noted Andy Policano, Dean of The Merage School of Business. "This includes a broad array of training in basic board functions, including board leadership; involvement in company strategy; financial responsibilities; ethics; compensation responsibilities; and regulatory issues and requirements," Policano said. "It's a truly unique program because instructors are drawn from the world-class faculty of the Merage School and other southern California universities, as well as from leading southern California business executives, through the auspices of FCD. We are delighted to partner with the FCD as part of our commitment to the southern California business community to provide cutting edge, innovative and immediately applicable executive education."

The new director education program is the next generation governance course built on course work developed in the fall of 2005 by FCD and offered to Merage School Executive MBA students as an extracurricular program. Thirty-eight students completed the original nine-session program in March 2007 and earned director accreditation from RiskMetrics Group that was valid for two full years. In the summer of 2007, the Merage School elevated the MBA governance program to an elective class qualifying for course credit.

The new course will be offered in two 2-day sessions for a total of 28 hours of education. Classes will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Merage School on the UC Irvine campus, on Thursdays and Fridays, April 24-25 and May 22-23, 2008. Students will also attend the annual FCD Governance Outlook event on the evening of May 22, which will feature a presentation by a nationally recognized speaker on emerging governance issues and trends for the coming year.

Cost for the intensive director education program is $2,900 per student.
