FedDev Ontario Announces Funding for Innovative Manufacturers in Guelph and New Hamburg

Today, the Honourable Bardish Chagger, Minister of Small Business and Tourism, alongside Lloyd Longfield, Member of Parliament for Guelph, announced combined funding of up to $6.6 million to the Hammond Manufacturing Company and Ontario Drive & Gear Limited to acquire innovative technologies, boost productivity, generate job growth and increase business and export opportunities. This announcement was made on behalf of Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for FedDev Ontario.

The Canadian economy is shifting and traditional industries such as manufacturing must adapt to a more competitive global economy. The Government of Canada is committed to supporting innovative manufacturers, like the Hammond Manufacturing Company and Ontario Drive & Gear Limited, obtain the tools they need to succeed.

The Hammond Manufacturing Company, headquartered in Guelph, received an investment of up to $3.46 million from FedDev Ontario, to buy equipment, improve processes, support expansion to a new facility in Guelph and make facility modifications at both the new location and the existing facility in Guelph.

Ontario Drive & Gear Limited, located in New Hamburg, received funding of up to $3.14 million from FedDev Ontario, to purchase new gear manufacturing equipment, expand its engineering department by 10,000-square feet and advance new product lines to become more competitive and reach new markets.

These efforts are expected to help the companies increase their competitiveness and productivity, while also boosting sales and increasing export opportunities in new markets. The projects are also projected to have spillover benefits, with increased production benefitting supply chains across southern Ontario and local equipment vendors.

FedDev Ontario Announces Support for Innovative Manufacturers in Guelph and New Hamburg

The Government of Canada is committed to helping manufacturers become more innovative, competitive and successful. To this end, it is providing up to $6.6 million, through FedDev Ontario's Investing in Business Growth and Productivity (IBGP) initiative, to two manufacturers located in Guelph and New Hamburg, to support productivity improvements, job creation and exports to global markets.

Hammond Manufacturing Company Limited Established in 1917 and headquartered in Guelph, Ontario, the Hammond Manufacturing Company manufactures electrical products and enclosures including power bars. The company also operates in Waterloo, Aberfoyle and Buffalo, New York and has sales and distribution centres in export markets including the U.S., U.K. and Australia.
Funding will support the purchase and installation of new advanced equipment, including an environmentally-friendly paint line; process improvements; and facility modifications at the company's new and existing facilities in Guelph.

Ontario Drive & Gear Limited Founded in 1962 in New Hamburg, Ontario, Ontario Drive & Gear designs, tests and manufactures quality gears, transmissions and vehicles. It is a key supplier for automotive, industrial and defence industries.
Funding will support the acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment and the expansion of its engineering department and new Gear Division product lines.

Investing in Business Growth and Productivity Initiative

The Investing in Business Growth and Productivity initiative is aimed at helping established businesses to expand their operations, invest in productivity improvements and compete globally.

Funding is available to:

  • Grow established businesses through facility expansion or improvements;
  • Increase business adoption of new technologies and processes to improve productivity; and
  • Increase business capacity to participate in global markets, diversify markets and integrate in global value chains.
