Federal Funding Announced For Cap-aux-Meules, Quebec

QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Nov. 23, 2007) - The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and Minister Responsible for Quebec, today announced, on behalf of the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), an investment of $45,000 to conduct a preliminary design study which will assess potential solutions to congestion problems at Cap-aux-Meules fishing harbour in the Magdalen Islands.

"The harbour authority of Cap-aux-Meules has clearly established that such a study is necessary in order to be able to adequately meet the needs of fish harvesters," said Minister Cannon. "This study demonstrates DFO's commitment to supporting the work of harbour authorities with a view to ensuring safe and efficient facilities for commercial fishers".

The study will look at various options to address problems caused by the congestion in the fishing harbour. DFO is working closely with the harbour authority, commercial fishers, marina representatives and the municipality of Cap-aux-Meules.

The study will be implemented under the Small Craft Harbours Program in co-operation with the harbour authority of Cap-aux-Meules that manages and operates the facilities for local users, and is to be completed by the end of February 2008. Such co-operation with clients makes it possible for the federal government to continue to provide an operable and safe network of harbours and harbour facilities for commercial fishers across the country.
