Federal Government Prepared to Assist Maritime Provinces Facing Severe Weather Conditions and Damage

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 23, 2010) - Today, the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, indicated that, should there be a need, the federal government can provide assistance to the Maritime provinces in response to damage incurred as a result of recent severe weather.

"The Government of Canada is monitoring the situation in the Maritimes closely. Should there be a request, we stand ready to help affected provinces should assistance be requested. Our government is committed to helping provinces in their efforts to respond to and recover from the damage and destruction caused by recent storms, and to ensure that communities are able to begin the process of rebuilding. We commend residents of the Maritime provinces for the resilience they have shown during this difficult time."

"In response to the Government of New Brunswick's request for expertise in electrical and health inspection, as well as environmental and structural engineering, the government will deploy personnel from Environment Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to provide support to provincial technical teams already in the field. The government will continue to look favourably at deploying other federal personnel, as requested by the provinces, to assist them during these difficult times."

"The federal government has funding arrangements in place to assist the provinces and territories if requested. By working together, we can make a difference when faced with large natural disasters."

In the event of a natural disaster in Canada, the federal government can provide financial assistance to provincial and territorial governments through Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements (DFAA) to help meet the costs of response and recovery. Any request for DFAA assistance will be processed according to the DFAA guidelines, as is the case for all such disasters across the country.

For information on the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements, see the Backgrounder (http://www.publicsafety.gc.ca/prg/em/dfaa/index-eng.aspx).
