The Federation, Jewish Communities of Western CT to Meet With Israeli and Palestinian Leaders to Share Model for Peaceful Coexistence

SOUTHBURY, CT--(Marketwire - August 28, 2009) - Leaders of an Israeli and Palestinian city will be making an unprecedented joint appearance at a Connecticut Jewish Federation this week to detail how they are working for peaceful coexistence.

Mayor Daniel Attar of Gilboa in Northern Israel, his Arab-Israeli Deputy Mayor, Ead Saleem, and Governor Qaddoura M. Qaddoura of Jenin, in the West Bank, will be speaking at 1 p.m. on Sunday, August 30 at the Federation, Jewish Communities of Western Connecticut, 444 Main St. North. This will be Governor Qaddoura's first visit to the United States, and he received special authorization from Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas for this trip.

Congressman Chris Murphy and Attorney General Richard Blumenthal will also be at the forum and offer brief remarks. Written remarks by Senator Joseph Lieberman will be read.

The Israeli and Palestinian officials were recently featured in a front-page story in The New York Times about new efforts to promote Palestinian-Israeli economic ties and foster increased stability. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former British Prime Minister and Mideast peace envoy Tony Blair have been leading these efforts to promote peace in the region.

"This is a landmark initiative for our Jewish community, and one that can serve as an example to those involved in conflict anywhere in the world," stated Executive Director of Jewish Communities of Western CT, Inc. Robert Zwang. "Our goal is a better future for Israel and her neighbors and to help expand the circle of peace beyond the political, to support these heroic partners in their successful experiment."

The Aug. 30 event starts promptly at 1 p.m., and there is a tax-deductible contribution of $36 per person. For security purposes, and due to limited seating, advanced registration is recommended. A photo ID is required at the door. For more information, contact Robert Zwang, (203) 267-3177 or
