Female Doctor Becomes CEO of Saint Joseph Hospital

Roberta Luskin-Hawk, M.D., Is One of Four Female Physician CEOs in Illinois

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwire - September 3, 2009) - Roberta Luskin-Hawk, M.D., became the new CEO of Saint Joseph Hospital, Resurrection Health Care on Aug. 31. She is one of only four female doctors to serve as a hospital CEO in Chicago and Illinois. She is an expert on the topics of H1N1 (swine flu), AIDS/HIV and infectious disease.

Dr. Luskin-Hawk founded Lakeshore Infectious Disease Associates, and has operated the practice for 24 years while serving on the hospital's medical staff since 1985. In the Spring of 2009, she led a team of hospital physicians and staff in educating the community and patients about prevention and treatment of the H1N1 (swine flu) virus.

She has served as chief, Section of Infectious Diseases; director, Graduate Medical Education; and chairperson, Department of Medicine. In addition, she co-founded one of Chicago's first inpatient HIV Units at Saint Joseph in 1987, which has served thousands of patients from Chicago and its suburbs. As an AIDS/HIV advocate, she established in 1989 an independent, not-for-profit clinical research consortium in Chicago -- AIDS Research Alliance Chicago (ARAC) -- for which she served as principal investigator for 15 years. She secured more than $20 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for an HIV clinical research program that provided underrepresented populations, such as women and African-Americans, with access to life-saving HIV drugs through clinical trials.

She has been recognized for her commitment to the community by Howard Brown Health Center and the AIDS Alternative Health Project. She was named to the NIH State of the Art Committee on Antiretroviral Therapy in Adults with HIV Infection.

Dr. Luskin-Hawk earned her bachelor of science in biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and her doctor of medicine from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. She completed her Internal Medicine Residency, where she served as chief resident, at Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center, and her Infectious Disease Fellowship at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
