Festival Sefarad de Montreal Unveils its Program

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Oct. 6, 2009) - In November, Gad Elmaleh, Enrico Macias, Ishtar Alabina and Felix Gray will participate in the upcoming Festival Sefarad de Montreal event (Montreal Sephardic Festival). From November 1st to November 15th, 2009, there will be a celebration of the Jewish Francophone culture. With famous hostest Sonia Benezra acting as spokesperson, 15 days of festivities and program offers of various compelling cultural venues, this 2009 vintage promises to be exciting. Showcasing a number of personalities and internationally renowned artists sharing humor, music, theater, fashion, conferences and debates, the event organizers are excited at the idea of having you discover part of their culture and of featuring their talented craftsmen. In a word, the Festival promises to feature a very attractive series of events that will appeal to both intellectuals and the more festive minds.


Much appreciated by Montrealers, humorist Gad Elmaleh will appear at the Theatre St-Denis on Tuesday, November 3rd, at 8 p.m. to perform his one man show entitled Papa est en haut (Dad is upstairs). He is an artist of Jewish and Moroccan background who can perfectly imitate the Quebecois accent. With his well-known passion, Gad Elmaleh will develop various themes such as paternity, childhood and education based on his experience.


At 8 p.m. on the November 7th and 8th week-end, the Theatre Olympia de Montreal (Montreal Olympia Theater) will have the great pleasure to welcome the renowned singer and musician Enrico Macias who last visited his Quebec fans about seven years ago. On this occasion, the artist will interpret with passion his greatest career hits besides sharing with us the musical beauty of his new repertoire. This event promises to be a captivating one, and will showcase the artist's immense talent. Please note that apart from his Montreal performance, Macias will also visit the City of Saguenay, Sherbrooke, Quebec and Gatineau to sing before his fans throughout the province.

At 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 10th at the Theatre Olympia de Montreal, the author-composer-interpreter Felix Gray (Don Juan, Sherazade) will be honored during a gala performance that only a few privileged fans will have the opportunity to attend. This colorful and full of surprises event will feature musical highlights of the Sherazade and Don Juan adventures. Produced by Yves Desgagnes and Gilles Maheu, this one-time performance will give the public an opportunity to experience the energy and emotion of artists gathered on stage to celebrate the famous lyric writer with songs, humor and dance. You will hear the hit songs of these two large-scale performing groups. Such talented artists and personalities as Jean-Francois Breau, Marie-Eve Janvier, Philippe Berghella, Rita Tabbakh, Caroline Neron, Herby Moreau and several others will appear on stage. Please note that a very limited number of seats will be available for sale to the general public.

Ishtar Alabina, the Middle East Queen of world music, is back on stage at the Theatre Olympia de Montreal on November 12th and 14th at 8 p.m.. Accompanied on stage by the Gypsis group, this accomplished artist will perform truly mesmerizing rhythms of traditional and modern Arabic songs and dances. During her last visit in 2006, the artist filled the theatre on numerous occasions.


The theatrical arts will also be celebrated with the presentation of the Meches folles et bigoudis play on Monday, November 9th, at 8 p.m. at the Salle Pierre-Mercure. In the tradition of La Cage aux Folles, this play tells the hilarious story of a Gay Jewish couple faced with the wedding of the daughter of one of the two men. Under the direction of its author, Albert Maman, Meches folles et bigoudis brings to the stage Elie Abecassis, Karim, (upcoming comic French Star) Liliane Abitbol, Neev, Jimmy Muyal, Muriel Alloune and Danielle Cohen Paris.

Fashion Show

This event is one which the city's fashionistas will not want to miss. The Time Supper Club's stage will feature a number of fashion beauties and trends during a special presentation of some of Quebec's renowned brands: Buffalo, Rudsak, Report Collection and Femme De Carriere. The show will also feature the most electrifying musical ambiance of an internationally renowned DJ.

50th Anniversary Gala

The 2009 Sepharde Festival de Montreal coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Sephardic Jewish Community. Settled in Quebec nearly five decades ago, the Community managed to build one of the most dynamic diaspora's structure. To mark the anniversary of this vibrant and integral part of the large Montreal Jewish Community, a gala event will be held on Sunday, November 15, at Montreal's Windsor Hotel. Under the honorary chairmanship of Montreal's Mayor, Mr. Gerald Tremblay, and Finance Minister, Mr. Raymond Bachand, this event will host, to everyone's delight, such talented artists as Linda Thalie, Johanna Monty, Shlomo Bar, Benjamin Bouzaglo, Shimon Siboni, as well as Yail and Neev.
